The start of what we are striving for. Cows that are moderate in size with depth and fleshing ability. Add a good udder and birth weight that is moderate yet enough growth potential to put the pounds on the scale on sale day. Her type is pretty common of 847 daughters.

A Dam of Distinction cow that never fails to bring in one of the top calves every year. She works pretty hard at it weaning 54% of her body weight this year. She has an udder score of 7.

One of my favorites. She is always in good shape, has a good udder and raises a big calf while looking good at the same time. She shows that extra eye appeal that fits me and always seems to look young for her age. I would take a whole herd like her.

Udder quality is very important in our herd. This picture is of a 6 year old cow standing next to a 7 year old cow. One had a 7 for udder quality and the other had an 8. I keep udder scores on every cow ranging from 9 (perfect) to 1 (terrible) and put that information in my catalog.

I do add cows to my herd at times. When I find the right ones and they can be had I will pull the trigger and move my herd closer to my goal. Both of these cows came from Gordon Jamison and are out of the great cowmaker CL1 Domino 638. Both have an average weaning ratio well over 100% and in 3 crops each I have 5 females in the herd from these 2 exciting cows.

Another cow I added to my herd, this one came from Ken Coleman. She was interesting because she is out of CL1 Domino 065 and was bred to 847. I have been waiting for 065 daughters to raise me a bull at Ken's but the temptation of owning one was too great. She looks like she is going to pay off.

It is easy to show off cows on green grass and say how great they are but I think most people are more about results. Results are what pays the bills and keeps us raising cattle. Her result was a 108% weaning ratio.

TH Miss Domino 028

Weaned 48% of her body weight and has an average weaning ratio of 112% on her 3 calves. She is an 847 daughter.

TH Miss Domino 226

Weaned 53% of her body weight with her first calf. He is a bull out of GB L1 Domino 175 and she is another 847 daughter.

TH Miss Domino 289

Actual weaning weight of 645 pounds from a heifer that weighed 1065 and was bred again. That is 61% of her body weight with no creep. She is a daughter of 0214 and her bull calf is 847.

Some may wonder about a Hereford breeder website with pictures of cows that aren't red, but the fact is I still run some baldy cows. There is no doubt in my mind that the baldy cow is better in almost every category than either straight Hereford or straight Angus. The "Queen of the Prairie" or maybe it should be the "Pride of the Prairie" they are the result of the only free thing left and that is heterosis. Simply put they are more efficient, last longer and produce more than any other cow you can have. They take care of themselves better, are better enabled to cope with the extremes of weather and do it with less. Fact is, they are money makers and that is a trait that cannot be overlooked or discounted in the world today.
